Karen White's Passing

Karen J. White (Newby), 65, of Ypsilanti, received the inheritance reserved for her in Heaven on March 5, 2019 after a ten year battle with cancer.

Karen Jane Newby was born in Upland, CA into a pastor’s home on May 22, 1953. When she was five years old her family moved to Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia, Africa, to be missionaries with the Pilgrim Holiness Church. Her family eventually returned to America and settled in Spring Arbor, where Karen graduated from Western High School in 1971. She would go on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Nazareth College in Kalamazoo. On June 18, 1976 she married John White at Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church.

She and John, early in their marriage, chose Philippians 4:6, 7 as the verses that would guide them through life: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Karen led dozens of people to faith in Christ over the years, either through church ministries or in her nursing. She continued to impact people spiritually even while on hospice care, often praying for those who came to visit her. Karen was very artistic and over the years enjoyed many crafts. In a college art class she made her own engagement and wedding rings.

She never wanted more from life than she had and was not one to complain. In the final years of her life she enjoyed special times with her family including a number of cruises to the Caribbean and several family trips.

Karen is survived by her husband of 42 years, Rev. John White, children Andrew (Michelle), Matthew (Sarah) and Sarah (Jim Krueger), grandchildren Dustin Logsdon, Hadleigh and Sawyer White, her mother Rebecca Newby, sister Becky (Steve) Holton, brother John (Mary) Newby Jr. as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Dr John Newby and sister Sharon Page.

Visitation will be at Sherwood Funeral Home in Grass Lake from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 7, 2019. A celebration of life service will be held at Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church on Friday, March 8 at 11:00 AM with interment at Spring Arbor Cemetery. Visitation at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Spring Arbor University Nursing Department to establish a Karen Newby White Scholarship. The family would like to thank the congregation of Milan Free Methodist Church, the Southern Michigan Conference of the Free Methodist Church and Arbor Hospice for their many expressions of love and caring.
